Texas Longhorns Mascot History

The Birth of Bevo

The year was 1967, and the University of Texas was looking for a mascot. A group of students came up with the idea of a live longhorn steer, and the University Spirit Committee approved the idea in September 1975. The first Bevo, a 2,000-pound steer named Texas, made his debut at a basketball game in January 1968.

Hook 'Em Horns

The "Hook 'Em Horns" hand gesture and chant is one of the most recognizable symbols of the University of Texas. It was first used by students in the 1950s, and it quickly became a tradition at football games and other athletic events. The hand gesture is made by crossing the index and middle fingers of one hand and extending the other two fingers. The chant is "Hook 'Em Horns, Texas Fight!"
